2.0 Getting Started

Getting started

First launch

  1. A short welcome animation plays the first time Verbie opens. Tap Get Started to continue, or Skip in the corner.
  2. The Verbie splash screen appears briefly, then the app opens on the Quiz tab.
  3. The welcome animation is shown only once, ever. Reinstalling the app brings it back.

No account, sign-up, email address or password is required. Verbie works immediately.

Set up practice levels first

This is the single most useful thing a new customer can do, and the most common cause of "there are no questions" reports.

Settings → Practice → Practice Levels lets the customer choose which CEFR levels appear in their practice:

Level Label
A1 Beginner
A2 Elementary
B1 Intermediate
B2 Upper Intermediate
C1 Advanced
C2 Proficient

All six are selected by default. A beginner should deselect B2, C1 and C2 so the questions stay manageable. Tap Done to save — the choice applies to every quiz, every Speaker activity, and the daily goal.

Choose a voice

Settings → Practice → Voice offers Arjen and Ruth. One is assigned at random on first launch, so a customer may not realise a second voice exists.

Settings → Practice → Voice Speed offers 1.0x (Normal) and 0.75x (Slow). Slow is a real re-recording at a slower pace, not a pitch-shifted playback, so it stays natural.

Run a first quiz

  1. On the Quiz tab, set Questions (1, 3, 5, 10, 15, 20 or 25) and Time Limit (1, 2, 3, 5, 10, 15 or 30 minutes).
  2. Tap a category tile. The quiz starts straight away — there is no separate Start button.
  3. Answer by tapping one of the answer buttons (or typing, in the conjugation categories).
  4. Tap Next after each question.
  5. The Results screen shows the score, the XP earned, and a share button for a perfect score.
  6. Tap Another Quiz to return to the Quiz tab.

A good first configuration is 5 questions / 3 minutes / Verb Translation.

Suggested first-week path

Day Suggestion
1 Set practice levels. Run Verb Translation and Adjectives, 5 questions each.
2 Try the daily goal card at the top of the Quiz tab — it picks the category and settings automatically.
3 Add Perfect Tense (hebben/zijn) and Prepositional Objects.
4 Start Sneaker Speaker during a walk and try recording a few sentences.
5 Bookmark difficult words as they come up, then run Bookmark Speaker.
6+ Watch for the Learning Review card and clear it when it appears.

Things worth telling every new customer

  • Practise once a day to build a streak. One completed quiz per day is enough. Missing a day resets it — see 06 – XP, levels and streaks.
  • The bookmark icon is on every question. Tapping it saves the item to the Bookmarks tab for later.
  • The lightbulb "Hint" button reveals the English sentence or a definition without ending the question.
  • The speaker icon replays the Dutch audio at any time; most categories play it automatically.
