Translate

The Translate tab is a Dutch ⇄ English translator with spoken playback, a history, and a way to keep translations for later review. It is intended for the moment a customer meets an unfamiliar word in the wild — on a sign, in an email, in conversation.

Translating

1. Open the Translate tab. The language pair is shown at the bottom (for example Dutch → English).
2. Type into the large text field.
3. Verbie translates automatically about half a second after the customer stops typing — there is no need to press anything.
4. The translation appears in a blue card underneath.

The Translate button and the keyboard's Done key both translate immediately. New (top right) clears the field and the result.

Swapping direction

The ⇄ button in the language bar swaps the pair. If a translation is already on screen, its result becomes the new input and is translated straight back — handy for checking a phrase in both directions. Tapping the empty result card also swaps.

Listening

There is a speaker button on both cards:

• On the input card — hears the text as typed.
• On the result card — hears the translation.

Dutch is played with Verbie's own recorded voice where available, using the customer's Voice and Voice Speed settings from Settings → Practice. If that audio is not available, iOS's built-in speech is used instead, which sounds noticeably more synthetic. That fallback is expected behaviour, not a fault.

Copying and saving

On the result card:

Saved translations appear in the Bookmarks tab under Saved Translations, where they can be replayed and deleted. Tapping the bookmark again removes it.

History

The clock icon in the top left opens Recent translations. Every translation is kept here automatically, whether or not it was bookmarked.

• Tap any entry to reload it into the Translate screen.
• Swipe an entry to delete it.
• Edit enables multi-select, then Delete (n) removes several at once.
• Done closes the sheet.

Each row shows the source text, the translation, and the direction (NL → EN).

Adding Translate to the Home Screen

The first time the tab is opened, a one-off sheet explains how to put Translate one tap away:

1. Open Apple's Shortcuts app and find Open Translate under Verbie.
2. Add the action as a shortcut.
3. Use the Share button, then Add to Home Screen.

The customer can also just say "Open Verbie Translate" to Siri. See 13 – Siri and Shortcuts.

Requirements and limits

• Translate needs an internet connection. It is a server-backed service, not an on-device model. There is no offline mode.
• It handles words, phrases and sentences. It is not built for long documents.
• Only Dutch ⇄ English. No other language pairs.
• Time spent in Translate does not consume the free preview, which only counts active practice sessions.

Common questions

"Nothing happens when I type." Check the connection. If a translation fails, Verbie shows an alert with the reason — read that message back when reporting an issue.

"Why does it translate before I finish?" It waits for a brief pause in typing. Keep typing and it will retranslate; the final result reflects the complete text.

"The Dutch pronunciation sounds robotic." That phrase had no recorded audio available, so iOS's built-in voice was used. Common words and sentences inside the quizzes use the recorded voices.

"Can I clear my whole history?" Not in one action. Use Edit in the history sheet to select and delete in bulk.
