XP, levels and streaks
Verbie tracks two separate things: XP and level (total effort, never goes down) and the daily streak (consistency, resets if a day is missed).
XP
XP is earned at the end of a quiz session:
| Action | XP |
|---|---|
| Each correct answer | 10 XP |
| Finishing a quiz with every answer correct | +50 bonus |
| Completing the daily goal | The bonus shown on the goal card |
The Results screen shows the XP earned, and Settings shows the running total.
Notes that come up often:
- XP is awarded even if the timer runs out, as long as at least one question was attempted. The +50 perfect bonus needs the quiz to actually be finished.
- Ending a quiz with the ✕ button awards nothing.
- Speaker activities do not award XP. Sneaker Speaker, Vocabulary Speaker and Bookmark Speaker are practice loops with no scoring — they also do not count towards the streak. This surprises customers, so say it plainly.
- Learning Review sessions do award XP.
Levels
Levels come from total XP. Each level costs more than the last: level 2 needs 100 XP, level 3 another 200, level 4 another 300, and so on.
| Level | Total XP needed |
|---|---|
| 1 | 0 |
| 2 | 100 |
| 3 | 300 |
| 4 | 600 |
| 5 | 1,000 |
| 6 | 1,500 |
| 7 | 2,100 |
| 8 | 2,800 |
| 9 | 3,600 |
| 10 | 4,500 |
| 11 | 5,500 |
| 12 | 6,600 |
Each level carries a title:
| Levels | Title |
|---|---|
| 1–2 | Beginner |
| 3–4 | Learner |
| 5–7 | Scholar |
| 8–11 | Expert |
| 12+ | Dutch Master |
The purple card at the top of the Quiz tab and in Settings shows the current level, its title, and a progress bar towards the next level. A sound plays on the Results screen when a level is reached.
The daily streak
The streak counts consecutive days on which at least one quiz was finished.
- It increases by one on the first completed quiz of a new day. Further quizzes the same day do not increase it.
- Missing a full day resets it to 0.
- A session ended with ✕ does not count. A session that ran out of time does count, provided a question was attempted.
- Speaker activities do not count.
The day boundary is midnight in the device's own time zone.
Streak appearance
The icon and colour change as the streak grows — this is the visual reward, and customers do notice it.
| Streak | Icon |
|---|---|
| 0–2 days | Grey flame outline |
| 3–6 days | Orange filled flame |
| 7–13 days | Lightning bolt |
| 14–29 days | Circled lightning bolt |
| 30–59 days | Trophy |
| 60–89 days | Star |
| 90+ days | Crown |
Reaching a new tier plays a level-up sound at the end of the quiz.
Sharing a streak
Once the streak is above zero, Settings → Share Streak opens the iOS share sheet with a ready-made message ("🔥 I have a 12 days streak on Verbie! 🔥"). A perfect quiz score also offers Share My Score on the Results screen, along with a fireworks animation.
Where progress is stored, and what happens on a new device
Level, XP, streak and last-practice date are saved on the device and also backed up to Verbie's servers against an anonymous device identifier.
- On the same device, progress survives app updates.
- The backup means a temporary reinstall can recover XP and streak.
- A new phone is treated as a new device. There is no login, so progress does not follow the customer across devices. Restoring the iPhone from an iCloud or encrypted local backup does carry it over, because the identifier is restored with it.
For support: when syncing, the higher XP total wins and the more recent practice date wins, so a customer who practised offline will not lose the better of the two records. If a customer reports XP that "went backwards", ask whether they practised on more than one device.
Common questions
"My streak reset even though I practised." Check that the session was actually finished — an abandoned quiz records nothing. Also check that the practice was a quiz and not a Speaker activity. A device whose clock or time zone changed dramatically can also cross a day boundary unexpectedly.
"I got every answer right but only got the base XP." The +50 bonus needs the quiz to be finished, not stopped by the timer.
"Can I reset my XP or streak?" Not from inside the app. Deleting and reinstalling clears the device's copy, but the server backup may restore it; treat this as a request to escalate rather than promising a reset.
