Quiz setup and practice levels
Questions and Time Limit
Two menus sit at the top of the category grid on the Quiz tab. They apply to the next session started.
- Questions — 1, 3, 5, 10, 15, 20 or 25
- Time Limit — 1, 2, 3, 5, 10, 15 or 30 minutes
The timer counts down for the whole session, not per question, and it turns red under one minute. A ticking sound plays during the final 15 seconds. When it hits zero the session ends with Time's Up!.
Both settings persist while the app is open. There is no "no time limit" option for a normal quiz — the untimed session in Verbie is the Learning Review (see 05).
Suggested pairings
| Goal | Questions | Time Limit |
|---|---|---|
| A quick warm-up | 5 | 3 min |
| A normal session | 10 | 5 min |
| Speed drilling | 10 | 2 min |
| A long session with time to think | 25 | 30 min |
Customers who feel rushed should raise the time limit rather than lower the question count — the pressure comes from the clock, not the number of questions.
Practice Levels (CEFR)
Settings → Practice → Practice Levels
| Level | Label |
|---|---|
| A1 | Beginner |
| A2 | Elementary |
| B1 | Intermediate |
| B2 | Upper Intermediate |
| C1 | Advanced |
| C2 | Proficient |
Tap a level to include or exclude it; a checkmark shows it is included. All six are on by default, and the setting is saved as soon as it is changed. Settings → Practice → Practice Levels shows a summary such as "4 of 6 levels selected".
This one setting filters everything:
- which quiz questions can appear, in every category
- which sentences Sneaker Speaker plays
- which words Vocabulary Speaker plays
- how hard the Number Listening quiz is
- which questions the Learning Review considers
- which levels the daily goal is generated from
Level guidance for customers
| If the customer says… | Suggest |
|---|---|
| "It's far too hard" | A1 and A2 only |
| "I'm doing an integration course" | A1, A2, B1 |
| "I'm working towards B2" | A2, B1, B2 |
| "It's too easy" | B2, C1, C2 only |
Number Listening and levels
The number quiz uses levels differently, because it is generated rather than drawn from the question database:
- A1 — numbers 0–99 only
- A2 — numbers up to 999, plus prices
- B1 and above — all types, including phone numbers
"No questions match" messages
If a category has nothing to offer at the selected levels, the Quiz tab shows a red message under the grid instead of starting a session. The wording tells you which setting is at fault:
| Message | Cause |
|---|---|
| "No Sneaker Speaker sentences match your Practice Levels." | Practice Levels too narrow for the sentence library |
| "No Vocabulary Speaker words match your Practice Levels." | Same, for vocabulary words |
| "Select at least one Practice Level in Settings." | Every level has been deselected |
| "Bookmark some quiz items before starting Bookmark Speaker." | No bookmarks saved yet |
| "Could not prepare this quiz. Please try again." | The bundled question database could not be read — see 16 – Troubleshooting |
The first fix to suggest for any of the first three is turning more levels back on in Settings → Practice → Practice Levels.
Checking what content exists
Settings → Statistics → Quiz Data shows a table of every quiz type against every CEFR level, with totals, and a headline count of all questions in the app. This is the authoritative answer when a customer asks "is there anything at C1 for separable verbs?" — a dash in that cell means no.
