Verifying a domain does two things: it authorizes the widget to load there, and
it lets us crawl the site to build your knowledge base. It's a one-time step per
domain, and verifying a domain automatically covers its subdomains
(www.example.com, shop.example.com).
Find it under Settings → Domains.
How do I verify a domain?
- Go to Settings → Domains, type your domain (
example.com), and click Add domain. - Choose one of the three methods shown and apply it to your site:
- HTML meta tag — paste the tag inside the
<head>of your homepage. - Custom page — create the named page at the root of your site containing the tag shown.
- DNS TXT record — add the TXT record on your domain with the value shown.
- HTML meta tag — paste the tag inside the
- Click Verify.
If verification fails immediately after a DNS change, wait a few minutes and try again — DNS propagation isn't instant.
Why is my widget blocked on a site?
Because of how the allowlist works, and this catches people out:
- With no verified domains, the widget loads anywhere.
- As soon as you verify your first domain, the widget is restricted to your verified domains only.
So if you verify example.com and your widget also runs on staging.acme.net,
it will stop working there until you add that domain too. Add every host it
should run on.
Do I need to verify to use the product?
Only for crawling. You can install the widget and take chats without verifying anything. But we only crawl sites you control, so building your knowledge base from your website requires a verified domain.
